RUDIMENT #25 OF 40 · FLAM RUDIMENTS

Single Flammed Mill

The single flammed mill starts with a flam and a double, then two singles: lR R L R. It is like a paradiddle turned inside out.

Sticking

lR R L R rL L R L

Capital letters are main notes. Small letters are grace notes played just before the main note.

How to practice it

  1. Play the main notes alone first, without grace notes.
  2. Add the grace notes, keeping them low and quiet, about an inch off the head.
  3. Speed up only when every flam sounds like one thick note, not two.
  4. The double comes first here, right after the flam. Keep it even with the singles that follow.

Where you will use it

Mills are a good way to practice starting phrases with a double, which helps on fast tom fills.
