RUDIMENT #27 OF 40 · FLAM RUDIMENTS

Pataflafla

The pataflafla has a flam on the first and last notes of each group of four: lR L R rL. Two flams back to back across the group boundary make it tricky.

Sticking

lR L R rL

Capital letters are main notes. Small letters are grace notes played just before the main note.

How to practice it

  1. Play the main notes alone first, without grace notes.
  2. Add the grace notes, keeping them low and quiet, about an inch off the head.
  3. Speed up only when every flam sounds like one thick note, not two.
  4. The last flam of one group and the first flam of the next come right after each other. Keep the grace notes low.

Where you will use it

Played between snare and toms, it has a floating, jazzy feel.
