RUDIMENT #10 OF 40 · ROLL RUDIMENTS
Nine Stroke Roll
The nine stroke roll is four double strokes that release into an accented single. It fills one beat with doubles and lands on the next beat.
Sticking
R R L L R R L L R / L L R R L L R R L
Capital letters are main notes. Small letters are grace notes played just before the main note.
How to practice it
- Play it at a slow tempo with the click, counting out loud.
- Listen for evenness: every double should have two equal notes.
- Raise the tempo 5 BPM at a time. When it gets messy, drop back 10.
- Start the roll soft and let it grow into the release, like a small crescendo.
Where you will use it
A nine stroke roll is the classic one-beat roll in marches and concert snare parts.
