RUDIMENT #9 OF 40 · ROLL RUDIMENTS

Seven Stroke Roll

The seven stroke roll is three double strokes that release into an accented single note. Here the doubles sit on a triplet pulse, so the roll fills one beat and releases on the next.

How to practice it

  2. Listen for evenness: every double should have two equal notes.
  3. Raise the tempo 5 BPM at a time. When it gets messy, drop back 10.
  4. Feel the triplet: the three doubles start on 1, trip and let. Then land the release right on the beat.
