RUDIMENT #4 OF 40 · ROLL RUDIMENTS

Multiple Bounce Roll

The multiple bounce roll, also called the buzz roll or press roll, lets each stick bounce several times per stroke. Played smoothly, the separate strokes disappear and you get one sustained sound.

Sticking

R L R L (each stroke buzzed)

Capital letters are main notes. Small letters are grace notes played just before the main note.

How to practice it

  1. Play it at a slow tempo with the click, counting out loud.
  2. Listen for evenness: every double should have two equal notes.
  3. Raise the tempo 5 BPM at a time. When it gets messy, drop back 10.
  4. Press the stick gently into the head and let it bounce. Match the length of the buzz in each hand so there are no gaps.

Where you will use it

Concert snare rolls, jazz press rolls on the snare, and swells into a crash all use the multiple bounce roll.
