RUDIMENT #5 OF 40 · ROLL RUDIMENTS

Triple Stroke Roll

The triple stroke roll plays three strokes with each hand: right, right, right, left, left, left. Written as triplets, it trains your fingers and wrists to control more than two bounces per stroke.

Sticking

R R R L L L

Capital letters are main notes. Small letters are grace notes played just before the main note.

How to practice it

  1. Play it at a slow tempo with the click, counting out loud.
  2. Listen for evenness: every double should have two equal notes.
  3. Raise the tempo 5 BPM at a time. When it gets messy, drop back 10.
  4. Play all three notes at the same volume. Most people let the third note die away, so listen for it.

Where you will use it

Triple strokes are a favorite for fast, fluid fills and show up a lot in drum corps and modern gospel chops.
