RUDIMENT #3 OF 40 · ROLL RUDIMENTS

Single Stroke Seven

The single stroke seven is six fast alternating notes that release into an accented seventh note. The six notes are played as a sextuplet across one beat, and the accent lands on the next beat.

Sticking

R L R L R L R

Capital letters are main notes. Small letters are grace notes played just before the main note.

How to practice it

  1. Play it at a slow tempo with the click, counting out loud.
  2. Listen for evenness: every double should have two equal notes.
  3. Raise the tempo 5 BPM at a time. When it gets messy, drop back 10.
  4. Aim the six notes at the accent. They should sound like one smooth gesture, not six separate hits.

Where you will use it

This is a classic fill shape: six quick notes down the toms, landing on a crash or the snare.
