RUDIMENT #22 OF 40 · FLAM RUDIMENTS

Flam Tap

The flam tap is a flam followed by a tap with the same hand: lR R, rL L. Played in 16th notes it becomes a series of accented doubles with grace notes.

Sticking

lR R rL L

Capital letters are main notes. Small letters are grace notes played just before the main note.

How to practice it

  1. Play the main notes alone first, without grace notes.
  2. Add the grace notes, keeping them low and quiet, about an inch off the head.
  3. Speed up only when every flam sounds like one thick note, not two.
  4. Let the stick bounce: the flam is a down stroke, the tap after it is a low stroke from the rebound.

Where you will use it

Flam taps are a staple of rudimental snare drumming and sound huge played between snare and floor tom.
