RUDIMENT #21 OF 40 · FLAM RUDIMENTS

Flam Accent

The flam accent is a flam followed by two singles, in triplets: lR L R, then rL R L. The flam switches hands every group.

Sticking

lR L R rL R L

Capital letters are main notes. Small letters are grace notes played just before the main note.

How to practice it

  1. Play the main notes alone first, without grace notes.
  2. Add the grace notes, keeping them low and quiet, about an inch off the head.
  3. Speed up only when every flam sounds like one thick note, not two.
  4. The two taps after the flam should be low and soft, so the flam is the only loud note.

Where you will use it

Its triplet swing makes it great for shuffle fills and 6/8 grooves.
