RUDIMENT #17 OF 40 · DIDDLE RUDIMENTS

Double Paradiddle

The double paradiddle is four singles and a double: R L R L R R. Six notes to a group, it fits naturally into triplets and 6/8 time.

Sticking

R L R L R R L R L R L L

Capital letters are main notes. Small letters are grace notes played just before the main note.

How to practice it

  1. Say the sticking out loud as you play it.
  2. Accent the first note of each group and keep the rest soft.
  3. Once it is even, try it on hi-hat and snare, or around the toms.
  4. Accent the first note of each group of six. Played in triplets, the accent falls on every other beat.

Where you will use it

It is great for triplet fills, and moving the accents to toms or cymbals creates a big, rolling sound.
