RUDIMENT #16 OF 40 · DIDDLE RUDIMENTS

Single Paradiddle

The paradiddle is two singles and a double: R L R R, then L R L L. Because it switches the leading hand each time, it is one of the most useful rudiments on the drum set.

Sticking

R L R R L R L L

Capital letters are main notes. Small letters are grace notes played just before the main note.

How to practice it

  1. Say the sticking out loud as you play it.
  2. Accent the first note of each group and keep the rest soft.
  3. Once it is even, try it on hi-hat and snare, or around the toms.
  4. Accent the first note of each group and keep the other three soft. That accent pattern is what makes it musical.

Where you will use it

Paradiddles are everywhere: in grooves (right hand on the hi-hat, left on the snare), in fills around the toms, and in jazz comping.
