RUDIMENT #35 OF 40 · DRAG RUDIMENTS

Single Dragadiddle

The single dragadiddle is a paradiddle where the first note is played as a drag, a quick double stroke: RR L R R. The accent falls on the drag.

Sticking

RR L R R LL R L L

Capital letters are main notes. Small letters are grace notes played just before the main note.

How to practice it

  1. Play the main notes alone first, without the drags.
  2. Add the drag as a soft, close double stroke from the other hand.
  3. Speed up only when the drags stay quiet and the accents stay clear.
  4. The double at the front is fast, like two 32nd notes. Then settle back into even 16ths.

Where you will use it

It is a smooth way to add a ruff to the front of paradiddle grooves and fills.
