Part 4 · Rock Grooves · Chapter 51

Sixteenth-Note Hi-Hat, One Hand

At slow and medium tempos, the right hand can play sixteenth notes on the hi-hat by itself. The left hand still plays the snare on 2 and 4.

EXAMPLE 51.1One-hand sixteenths
TEMPO

Right hand only on the hi-hat.

EXAMPLE 51.2Accent the eighths
TEMPO

Accent the hi-hat on the numbers and &s for a stronger feel.

Small strokesTIP

Keep the hi-hat strokes small and close to the cymbal. Big strokes at this speed will wear you out.
