Part 3 · Rudiments · Chapter 29

The Single Paradiddle

The paradiddle combines two singles and a double: R L R R, L R L L. Because it ends with a double, the lead hand switches every group. Say it: “pa-ra-did-dle”.

EXAMPLE 29.1Paradiddles
TEMPO

Accent the first note of each group.

EXAMPLE 29.2Paradiddle groove
TEMPO

Right hand on the hi-hat, left hand on the snare, with the paradiddle sticking. It turns a rudiment into a groove.

InversionsTIP

Start the paradiddle on different notes and you get new patterns: R R L R (starting on the double) is great for grooves.
