Part 3 · Rudiments · Chapter 28

The Double Stroke Roll

The double stroke roll plays two notes with each hand: R R L L. Played fast, it becomes the smooth “open roll” used in marching and concert music.

The second note of each double is played by letting the stick bounce and helping it with your fingers. The goal is for the second note to be as loud as the first.

Slashes through the stem mean “play a roll”. Three slashes on a quarter note means fast doubles for the whole beat.

Accent the second noteTIP

To even out your doubles, practice them with an accent on the second note of each pair: R R L L.
