RUDIMENT #30 OF 40 · FLAM RUDIMENTS

Flam Drag

The flam drag is a triplet with a flam on the first note, a double in the middle, and a single to finish: lR LL R, rL RR L.

Sticking

lR L L R rL R R L

Capital letters are main notes. Small letters are grace notes played just before the main note.

How to practice it

  1. Play the main notes alone first, without grace notes.
  2. Add the grace notes, keeping them low and quiet, about an inch off the head.
  3. Speed up only when every flam sounds like one thick note, not two.
  4. Keep the triplet even. The double in the middle should fit exactly into its triplet space.

Where you will use it

It is a classic drum corps rudiment and adds flavor to triplet and 6/8 fills.
