Part 3 · Rudiments · Chapter 41

The Buzz Roll

The buzz roll (or multiple-bounce roll) presses each stroke into the head so it buzzes several times. Alternating buzzing strokes quickly makes a smooth, sustained sound. It is written with a z through the stem.

EXAMPLE 41.1Buzz strokes
TEMPO

Each note is one buzz. Press slightly into the head with relaxed fingers.

EXAMPLE 41.2Buzz roll into an accent
TEMPO

Buzz for three beats, tie into an accent on 4.

Same length on both handsTIP

The most common problem is one hand buzzing longer than the other. Practice slow buzz strokes, one hand at a time, until they match.
