Part 1 · Getting Started · Chapter 4

Setting Up and Sitting

A comfortable setup makes everything easier. Sit on the drum throne so your thighs slope very slightly down toward your knees. Your back is straight but relaxed, and your feet rest flat on the pedals.

Playing the pedals

There are two main ways to play the bass drum. Heel down keeps the heel on the pedal and moves the foot from the ankle; it is quieter and more controlled. Heel up lifts the heel and uses the whole leg; it is louder and used in most rock. Try both.

TEMPO

Bass drum on every beat, hi-hat foot closing on 2 and 4. Let your feet settle into a steady walk.

Stay relaxedTIP

If your shoulders creep up or your jaw clenches, stop, breathe out, and start again slower. Tension is the biggest enemy of good time.
